Language & place are intimately connected. We live and speak in an environment, and this environment makes up our daily reality. There are a number of ways the environment may shape languages: the topography may lead to different kinds of directionals (linguistic markers indicating direction), the specific weather conditions may lead to different ways of expressing agency (the “doer” of an action) or varying ways of expressing predictability, the varying lengths of day/night may lead to various ways of expressing time, and so on.
